Installing Memory in A Laptop Is Really Simple
Installing memory in a laptop computer seems to give people pause, but it?s really a very simple transaction.
First, you need to know what type of memory is inside your laptop. The documentation that came with your laptop should tell you, but those papers get lost over time.
If you don?t know or can?t find out, head over to Crucial.com. They specialize in memory and storage and have a nifty Memory Advisor tool that can help you figure out what memory you need. Read everything about the memory you can find?in many instances the memory sticks must be installed in pairs, or they won?t work. Ordering one stick may not be an option.
Once you have the memory, how do you install it? First, make sure you have the proper tools, and don?t start the project without them! You?ll need a non-magnetic-tip screwdriver that?s the right size for the screws in your laptop. Screwdrivers that are too big or too small tend to slip, and there?s not much room for error on a laptop. If you have to, go out and buy a $10 screwdriver (non-magnetic, don?t forget) to protect your $1,000 investment. And get a zip-lock baggie for the little parts you?ll be taking off.
Now power your notebook to ?off?, unplug it, and take out the battery. Even non-magnetic screwdrivers are still metal, so minimize your risk of shock. Ground yourself by touching a piece of unpainted metal, especially if you?re standing on or near carpeting.
Now open the laptop case according to your user?s manual. If you can no longer find your user manual, download it from the manufacturer?s website. Find the location of the memory, and then only remove the components necessary to get to it. That may be the case (typically the bottom of the laptop) or the keyboard. Ground yourself again once the laptop is open. Make sure all screws go into the baggie.
Now you?re gazing at the interior of your laptop. You should see one or more memory sticks that look similar to the one(s) you ordered, with little clips on each end that hold them into their slots. Press down on those clips and the memory stick should pop up. Remove it by pulling carefully at the edges, trying not to touch the ?body? of the stick.
Install your new sticks in place of the old ones, still trying to hold on by the edges. You?ll notice a ?notch? in the gold contacts at the bottom edge of the stick, where it snaps into the slot. Make sure that?s lined up with the ?key? in the slot itself. When you press the stick in, it will take quite a bit of pressure. It should seat with a ?click? and just a hair of the gold contacts should still be showing. Now press the memory stick down flat into the laptop?still by the edges?and make sure it?s seated securely.
Turn your laptop on before you screw everything back together. You should see the new memory amount when your computer boots up. If not, try re-seating the memory sticks.
